Warriors Extend Win Streak to Six, Defeating La Verne 98-96
San Dimas, CA - On Tuesday, the Warriors took on NCAA DIII opponent, La Verne, in a pre-season matchup. The matchup mirrored the one from the season prior as LPU narrowly escaped with a victory on the road, 74-71. This game was a higher scoring affair with both teams scoring at will on the night. Ultimately, LPU was able to prevail and came out with the victory by a final score of 98-96. LPU improves upon their record start as they move to 6-0 on the season.
In this game, the Warriors got off to an unbelievable start on the offensive end. In the first 5 minutes of the game, LPU did not miss any of their first 11 shots, with 7 of them being 3-pointers. At the 15 minute mark in the first half, La Verne took a quick timeout as LPU was up 29-12. Eventually La Verne was able to claw their way back, making it a down to the wire matchup, with the Warriors ultimately taking the game. Kyler Villarreal continued his stellar play, finishing with 30 points while shooting an efficient 10-15 from the floor. Ethan Galang contributed 24 points of his own while shooting an impressive 5-7 from the perimeter. Adam Vasquez continues to be steady for LPU, doing a little bit of everything from the hybrid post position, finishing with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. While it was a quieter scoring night for Austin Cook, he still made his imprint on the game with his distribution, finishing with 9 points and 6 assists.
When reflecting on the team's victory, Coach Tim Cook stated, "What a matchup tonight. We were so fortunate to get a win against a really good opponent. It was an incredible job coaching by the La Verne staff and their team played fantastic. I'm really happy with how our guys responded to the pressure from our opponent, as we maintained our composure throughout. We were able to execute down the stretch, and finishing 20-22 from the free-throw line will always put you in a position to win a close game. So proud of this team."
